The Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program, commonly known as Reef Saudi, has reiterated its dedication to fostering the coffee industry within Saudi Arabia. With an investment surpassing SAR61 million since its establishment in 2020, the program has benefited 3,718 recipients involved in the coffee sector.
There has been a noticeable surge in the nation’s coffee production, with a 37% increase from 2020 to 2023. The figures soared from 800 tons to 1,485 tons, marking a significant milestone for the program, which envisions an annual coffee production of 7,000 tons by 2026.
Investing in the Future
Recognizing coffee as an increasingly critical component of the Kingdom’s economy, Reef Saudi is working to integrate coffee cultivation into the broader agricultural framework. The aim is to morph coffee into a profitable crop, broadening the agricultural economy, fostering additional economic value through related industries, and lessening the dependence on imported coffee.
Job Creation and Empowerment
The initiative foresees the coffee domain as a fertile ground for job opportunities, especially for the Kingdom’s youth. By bolstering producer incomes and enhancing living standards in rural communities, Reef Saudi is committed to empowering the populace.
Multi-faceted Approach
To materialize its objectives, Reef Saudi employs a comprehensive strategy. This includes improving access to financial resources, promoting superior agricultural practices via nurseries and demonstration farms, and embracing advanced harvesting techniques to curtail waste. The formation of cooperative societies and marketing hubs is aimed at reinforcing the long-term viability of the Saudi coffee industry. The program further endorses rainwater collection and the advancement of irrigation systems. Financial assistance for small-scale growers is paired with skill-enhancement programs for technical staff in associated sectors.
Strategic Initiatives
Reef Saudi is actively involved in various strategic endeavors. These include the development of coffee processing units in the regions of Al-Baha, Asir, and Jazan. Plans are also underway to establish exemplary farms and coffee seedling nurseries in strategic areas, setting the stage for future growth.
Broader Vision
The Reef Saudi initiative is part of a larger vision to empower minor agricultural producers. By improving access to resources, marketplaces, and vital farming services, the program aims to contribute significantly to food security, rural stability, environmental stewardship, and the judicious use of natural assets.
