At a recent international assembly in Beijing, the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GEOSA) took an active role in proceedings. Present at the convening of the International Advisory Committee of the United Nations Global Geospatial Knowledge and Innovation Centre, GEOSA’s participation was marked by the presence of its President, Dr. Eng. Mohammed Yahya Al-Sayel, who also serves as the Chair for the UN-GGIM Arab States Committee for Geospatial Information Management.
The agenda of the meeting was comprehensive, encompassing a thorough review and enhancement of the Committee’s strategic blueprint, as well as the annual planning for the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Network. The conversation extended to the operational aspects of the Committee, including the standards for referral and membership, and the integration of the Committee’s activities within the overarching framework plan.
In addition to operational discussions, the meeting also focused on the Committee’s consultative functions and its set responsibilities. Participants considered the mandates set forth by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC 2022/24), the role of UN-GGIM in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the application of the Integrated Geospatial Information Framework (UN-IGIF).
The objective of the UN-GGKIC: IAC is to enhance global geospatial expertise and capabilities, and to support the creation of geospatial knowledge and innovation hubs across nations. These hubs are designed to employ state-of-the-art methods, techniques, and analytical processes in the realm of geospatial information to promote shared advances and applications.
