Strategic Alliance to Boost Saudi's Startup Scene

MSA Nova has forged a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) aimed at empowering the startup landscape in Saudi Arabia. This alliance is poised to introduce joint investment ventures and create robust startup accelerator programs.

The ambition of MSA Nova is to catalyze the expansion of nascent enterprises and advance technological innovation, aligning with the objectives of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.

Ben Harburg, Managing Partner at MSA Nova, expressed that the partnership will capitalize on their expansive global network and KAUST’s impressive research prowess to catalyze innovation within Saudi Arabia.

“Through our partnership with KAUST, we reinforce our commitment to introducing leading-edge global technologies to the Kingdom, satisfying strategic needs and fostering the development of world-class domestic technologies,” Harburg stated.

The MoU highlights several collaborative focal points:

  1. Joint investment and accelerator programs: The establishment of a cohesive investment framework and the launch of flagship startup acceleration and incubation initiatives, primarily supporting companies innovating in fields such as artificial intelligence (AI).
  2. Research access and mentorship: Facilitating entry to KAUST’s innovative research, coupled with mentorship from MSA’s network of industry veterans to spur growth in university-affiliated startups.
  3. Entrepreneurial learning and talent cultivation: Crafting entrepreneurship education and developing internship opportunities that provide students with practical startup exposure within MSA’s portfolio.
  4. Technology transfer and sector-specific hubs: Collaborating with the Technology Transfer Office to streamline the intellectual property transfer process and creating specialized innovation centers to enhance engagement between startups and established industry players.
  5. Joint events and corporate partnerships: Hosting collaborative events to unify essential stakeholders and fostering partnerships between startups and established corporations within the networks of both KAUST and MSA Nova.

Ian Campbell, Vice President of National Transformation Initiative at KAUST, acknowledged the university’s role in spurring innovation and entrepreneurship across the Kingdom, appreciating the investor partners for their support and shared vision in nurturing a thriving ecosystem.
