Revival of Jeddah’s Historical Gems: Heritage Hotels to Enrich Tourism

Cultural Renaissance Through Jeddah's Heritage Hotel Initiative

In a significant development for the tourism industry in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, an initiative has been launched to operate heritage hotels within the city’s prestigious Historic District. This strategic move is supported by the Saudi Ministry of Culture and will be executed by Al Balad Development Company, a firm owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF). The objective is to elevate the tourism appeal of the region, boost service quality for tourists, and create an immersive cultural experience for those visiting the historic quarter of Jeddah.

The Jeddah Historic District Program is at the helm of rejuvenating Al Balad, which boasts a collection of over 600 historic edifices. The restoration of these heritage hotels is being undertaken with a keen eye on maintaining their distinct architectural qualities while meeting the highest international preservation standards. This meticulous approach aligns with the directives of UNESCO, which recognized the Jeddah Historic District as a World Heritage Site in 2014.

“We aim to provide an outstanding experience for visitors at a destination renowned for its inherent hospitality,” said Abdulaziz bin Ibrahim Al-Issa, Director General of the Jeddah Historic District Program. “Our collaboration with Al Balad Development Company is a crucial step towards revitalizing the area and offering visitors a comprehensive experience. This partnership marks the onset of broader cooperation, set to offer diverse hospitality experiences.”

Jamil bin Hassan Ghaznawi, CEO of Al Balad Development Company, shared his enthusiasm regarding the agreement, highlighting the synergy between the two entities. “Our joint efforts are focused on reviving ‘Al Balad’ as a hub for business, investment, and a premier global tourism destination,” Ghaznawi noted, viewing the agreement as a precursor to more extensive collaboration.

Upon completion of the restoration efforts, Al Balad Development Company will assume the operation of the heritage hotels through its ‘Al Balad Hospitality’ division. These hotels, encompassing 34 heritage houses, are poised to offer visitors a distinctive blend of historical ambiance and contemporary comfort. The Destination Management Office of the Jeddah Historic District Program will work alongside Al Balad Hospitality to augment the guest experience with unique local products and traditional Saudi experiences, all while upholding the region’s rich cultural legacy and hospitality customs.
