In a groundbreaking year for its travel sector, Saudi Arabia achieved a significant milestone, with foreign visitors’ expenditures soaring to new heights. According to initial figures from the Saudi Central Bank, international guest spending reached an unprecedented SAR135 billion (equivalent to $36 billion) in 2023, a 42.8% rise from the previous year.
The substantial increase in visitor spending symbolizes the nation’s determined efforts to enhance its tourism industry. Notably, in 2023, Saudi Arabia was at the forefront internationally, leading the UN’s tourism list for the growth rate of international tourists since 2019. The Kingdom saw an impressive 56% uptick in tourist arrivals, signaling its allure as a travel destination.
Garnering worldwide recognition, Saudi Arabia’s tourism feats have drawn accolades from entities like the UN World Tourism Organization and the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). Their commendation for hosting upwards of 100 million domestic and global tourists in 2023 underscores the Kingdom’s dedication to tourism development.
As per the United Nations Tourism Barometer report issued in January 2024, Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector demonstrated a robust 156% rebound in 2023 relative to 2019. This underscores the sector’s resilience and the effectiveness of Saudi Arabia’s strategic initiatives.
With continued investments in infrastructure, promotion of cultural heritage, and improving visitor experiences, Saudi Arabia’s tourism outlook appears bright. Emphasizing sustainability and innovation, the Kingdom is poised to further establish itself as a premier travel hotspot, attract a global audience, and contribute significantly to the diversification of its economy in line with its Vision 2030 objectives.
