Saudi Fund for Development Inaugurates Key Agricultural Venture in Mauritania

Boosting Food Security, the SFD Supports Mauritania with a Significant Investment

In a significant move towards bolstering agricultural productivity and food security in Mauritania, the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) marked the commencement of the Arkiz Agricultural Project. This initiative has received substantial financial backing through a development loan of $34 million from the SFD.

The inauguration event was graced by notable figures including Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouni, the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, and Moma Ould Beibata, Mauritania’s Minister of Agriculture. Also in attendance were Mohammed bin Ayed Albalawi, the Saudi Ambassador to Mauritania, and Eng. Bandar Al-Obaid, the SFD’s Director General of Arab Countries Operations, alongside a host of senior officials from both nations.

The objective of the Arkiz Agricultural Project is to reclaim around 6,700 hectares of arable land to increase agricultural output and create job opportunities. This endeavor is expected to significantly enhance Mauritania’s water, irrigation, and drainage systems. It will also provide essential agricultural machinery and clean drinking water for the farming community and residents.

As part of its strategic initiatives to support key development sectors in Mauritania, the SFD’s investment in the Arkiz project aligns with its broader commitment to fueling growth and strengthening infrastructure in the region. The fund has been a pivotal contributor to Mauritania’s development, with investments exceeding $665 million across 20 projects since 1979.

Moreover, the SFD has played a crucial role in administering numerous grants from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, channeling over $151 million into 28 developmental initiatives. These projects have played a significant part in driving forward various sectors within Mauritania, thereby elevating the standard of living and fostering sustainable development.
