Saudi Arabia’s Esports Expansion

Boosting GDP and creating jobs through esports growth

Saudi Arabia is poised to boost its GDP by SAR 50 billion over the next decade by expanding its esports industry. A report by PwC and the Saudi Esports Federation highlights the nation’s potential to become a global esports hub.

Esports has surged in popularity and revenue, especially during the pandemic. PwC forecasts the global market will grow from $2.06 billion in 2024 to $9.29 billion by 2032. Saudi Arabia is encouraged to leverage its strong digital infrastructure and youthful population to capitalize on this growth.

According to Abdulrahman Kanafani from PwC, the Middle East’s digital penetration and government support create a conducive environment for esports. He notes that esports has evolved into a significant cultural and economic force, with professional players, teams, and lucrative prizes. Saudi Arabia’s focus on youth and talent development positions it well to harness this momentum.

Esports as a Strategic Asset

Currently, Saudi Arabia boasts 23.5 million gaming enthusiasts, comprising about 67% of its population, and nearly 1,000 professional gamers. The nation hosted the inaugural Esports World Cup, underscoring its commitment to the industry.

As part of Vision 2030, the country is investing in digital infrastructure and gaming culture, aiming to contribute $13.3 billion to its GDP by 2030. This strategy also promises to create approximately 39,000 new jobs.

Furthering its ambitions, Saudi Arabia plans to launch Qiddiya, a comprehensive gaming and esports district expected to draw 10 million visitors annually. The Saudi Esports Federation is determined to establish the nation as a leading esports destination.

Turki Alfawzan, CEO of the Saudi Esports Federation, emphasized the sector’s role in showcasing Saudi Arabia’s dedication to innovation and youth empowerment. Strategic investments and talent development are key to building a global esports ecosystem in the Kingdom.
