Baker Hughes, a prominent energy technology company, has recently secured a significant contract from Worley, on behalf of Aramco, to provide advanced gas technology systems for the ongoing expansion of Saudi Arabia’s Master Gas System. The deal, which was finalized in the first quarter of 2024, signifies a major step forward in the Kingdom’s strategy to enhance its gas distribution network.
The company is slated to deliver 17 pipeline centrifugal compressors, each powered by cutting-edge aeroderivative gas turbines. This equipment will play a critical role in the construction of the new 4,000-km pipeline designed to augment the domestic gas supply. This initiative is aligned with Saudi Arabia’s commitment to diminish carbon emissions and curtail oil reliance. This order comes on the heels of a previous agreement in which Baker Hughes supplied 18 centrifugal compressors for the project’s initial two phases.
Yahya Abu Shal, Aramco’s Senior Vice President of Project Management, emphasized the dual benefits of Saudi Arabia’s abundant gas resources in both easing energy challenges and furthering decarbonization efforts. He expressed satisfaction with Baker Hughes’ long-standing collaboration and the successful implementation of technologies in the project’s earlier phases.
Lorenzo Simonelli, Chairman and CEO of Baker Hughes, highlighted the company’s three-decade-long history in supporting natural gas operations and its pivotal role in aiding Aramco to achieve lower emissions through a transition to gas. He underlined the importance of their solutions in the efficient use of natural gas and the company’s commitment to ensuring a dependable system for gas transportation throughout Saudi Arabia.
Further strengthening its local presence, Baker Hughes is expanding its Modon manufacturing site in Saudi Arabia. This expansion aims to double the workforce capacity and enhance project support within the Kingdom, including MGS3, by providing localized testing and packaging solutions. Notably, Baker Hughes has also delivered the inaugural trains of advanced hydrogen compression technology for the groundbreaking NEOM green hydrogen project in Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest of its kind.
