Pioneering Sustainability: Ericsson’s ECR to Revolutionize KSA Recycling

Saudi Arabia to Embrace Circular Economy with Ericsson's Digital Platform

During the esteemed Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2024 in Spain, a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked between Ericsson and stc Group’s iot squared. This agreement signifies the introduction of Ericsson’s innovative Connected Recycling (ECR) platform as a cutting-edge Software-as-a-Service within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

The collaboration aims to heighten the consciousness of effective waste management practices and play a key role in sculpting a more eco-conscious and sustainable future within the nation.

Ericsson’s Connected Recycling platform is a comprehensive solution designed to mitigate the environmental ramifications of waste by digitalizing the reverse supply chains. This enhancement allows for the optimization and ensures exhaustive traceability and transparency. The platform’s ultimate goal is to transform waste into recycled raw materials, thereby preserving natural resources and reducing landfill or incineration reliance.

Valuable recycling insights

Moreover, the platform boasts a robust sustainability reporting tool that yields critical recycling analytics. These insights are essential in refining operations and endorsing the principles of a circular economy. It is capable of assimilating external data, securely housing information, and managing big data effectively. This results in insightful visualizations and operational efficiencies along the value chain.

Under the terms of the MoU, both Ericsson and iot squared will present the ECR to the kingdom, targeting various waste streams. The initial phase will focus on Municipal Solid Waste (MSW).

Othman Aldahash, Chief Executive Officer of iot squared, expressed that their mission aligns with providing real-time analytics essential for informed decision-making and enhancing operations with intelligence. The ECR platform resonates with their goal to propel Saudi Arabia’s tech arena towards sustainability, echoing the Saudi Green Initiative’s objectives.

Building a better future

Håkan Cervell, the Vice President and Head of Customer Unit stc in Saudi Arabia and Egypt for Ericsson Middle East and Africa, emphasized Ericsson’s commitment to fostering a better tomorrow. He elaborated on how ECR encourages circularity, innovation, and sustainability by digitalizing and tracking waste streams. This launch, particularly addressing MSW in Saudi Arabia, cultivates a transparent marketplace for waste and recycled materials, which is in harmony with the Saudi Green Initiative’s vision. The partnership with iot squared is a step towards realizing this ambitious project.

The ECR initiative is a product of Ericsson ONE, the company’s internal accelerator designed to encourage Ericsson employees to develop and nurture new business ideas.
