Saudi Arabia Advances Green Energy with NREP’s Round 5 Bidders

Qualified Contenders for 3700 MW Renewable Projects Announced

The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has unveiled the roster of selected bidders for the fifth phase of its renewable energy initiative, the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), orchestrated under the guidance of the Ministry of Energy.

Launching the Request for Qualification (RFQ) for the latest round on November 12, 2023, the SPPC had by December 5, 2023, garnered Statements of Qualification (SOQ) from 31 hopefuls. Out of these, 23 entities have been deemed suitable to spearhead the projects.

This ambitious tranche aims to inject a substantial 3700 MW into the grid through a series of projects, which include:

  1. 2000 MWac Al Sadawi Solar PV Independent Power Producer (IPP) to be sited within Saudi Arabia’s Eastern province.
  2. 1000 MWac Al Masa’a Solar PV IPP planned for the Hail province.
  3. 400 MWac Al Henakiyah 2 Solar PV IPP to grace the Madinah province.
  4. 300 MWac Rabigh 2 Solar PV IPP destined for the Makkah Province.

Aligned with the Ministry of Energy’s strategic vision, the NREP seeks to substantially increase the contribution of renewable sources in the Kingdom’s energy portfolio, targeting a 50% share by 2030.

The following companies have been qualified for prominent roles in the Round 5 Projects:

  • Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar
  • Al Jomaih Energy & Water Co., Ltd.
  • Alfanar Company
  • B. Grimm Power Public Company Limited
  • BGL Renewable Energy Systems Installation LLC
  • EDF Renouvelables S.A.
  • FAS Energy KSA LLC
  • ITOCHU Corporation
  • Jinko Power (HK)
  • Kahrabel FZE
  • Korea Electric Power Corporation
  • Marubeni Corporation
  • Nebras Power Q.P.S.C.
  • Nesma Renewable Energy
  • Samsung C&T Corporation
  • SPIC Huanghe Hydropower Development Co. Ltd.
  • Sumitomo Corporation
  • Total Energies Renewables SAS

Additionally, the following have been selected as managing members:

  • GEK TERNA S. A
  • Gulf Energy Development Public Company Limited
  • JERA Co., Inc.
  • Power Construction Corporation of China
  • Saudi Electricity Company

The SPPC is entrusted with the preliminary development, tendering process, and the subsequent procurement of energy from these projects. To date, under the NREP, the SPPC has successfully awarded contracts for over 12.6 GW of renewable energy capacity.
