Saudi Arabia Discovers New Glow-in-the-Dark Scorpions

A new kind of scorpion has been discovered in Saudi Arabia. The National Centre for Wildlife announced the discovery of a new kind of scorpion belonging to the Leiurus genus in the Majami Al-Hadb Reserve, in southern Riyadh.

The scorpion, which can glow in the dark and is venomous, has been identified through shape and genetic analysis. The discovery has been published in international journals specialized in wildlife.

This new species brings the total number of known scorpion species to 22 globally, with five of them found in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The renowned scientific journal Zookeys published the new discovery in its September 7, 2023 issue. The new species has been added to the Zoobank and Genbank lists.

The National Centre for Wildlife is working to determine the prevalence of this species and assess its future situation. This effort is part of the center’s work to care for wildlife and maintain the Kingdom’s environmental balance and biodiversity.

According to researchers, the new scorpion glows in the dark and is venomous. The Miami Herald reported on this discovery after the publication of the study in the Zookeys journal.
