In commemoration of World Seafarers Day, Saudi Arabia’s Transport General Authority (TGA) has lauded the dedication and service of over 2,100 Saudi seafarers who are part of the Kingdom’s robust maritime fleet, comprising more than 420 vessels. This annual observance, instituted by the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO), underscores the pivotal contributions of maritime professionals to the global economy.
The TGA took this opportunity to underscore the importance of seafarer welfare and to highlight the Saudi maritime fleet’s leading status in the region. The organization emphasized the Kingdom’s commitment to maritime safety and its initiatives to bolster the sector’s growth and sustainability.
Among the notable efforts is the GloLitter initiative, which focuses on aiding developing nations in their battle against marine plastic waste, particularly in the maritime transport and fisheries sectors. The GloNoise program is another significant endeavor aimed at fostering a worldwide alliance to mitigate underwater noise. Additionally, the IMOCARES project is making strides in implementing technical solutions to decrease emissions from maritime shipping.
The Kingdom’s proactive role in maritime governance was further solidified by its election to the IMO Council for the 2024-2025 tenure, which garnered 143 votes from member states. The IMO’s mission is to regulate international maritime transport standards to enhance safety, security, and environmental preservation.
Strategically positioned as a bridge between three continents, Saudi Arabia is leveraging its geographic advantage to reinforce its stature as a premier global logistics hub, aligning with its national transport and logistics strategy.
