Saudi Arabia’s THE RIG: A New Chapter in Adventure and Leisure

Transforming Water Sports and Tourism with an Oil Heritage Twist

Saudi Arabia is on the brink of revolutionizing its adventure tourism and water sports offerings with the introduction of THE RIG, a novel project conceived by the Public Investment Fund. The development’s blueprint draws inspiration from the country’s storied oil and gas heritage, emulating the aesthetic of offshore drilling platforms.

Spanning over 300,000 square meters, THE RIG will be situated 40 kilometers offshore, near Al Juraid Island and the Berri Oil Field in the Arabian Gulf. The Oil Park Development Co., associated with the sovereign wealth fund, is tasked with the construction of this ambitious project.

This initiative is in line with the Public Investment Fund’s strategy and the broader objectives of Vision 2030, which strives to spur growth in the tourism sector, create jobs, and diversify the nation’s economy.

The CEO of OPDC, Raed Bakhrji, projected that by 2032, THE RIG would become an attraction for over 900,000 visitors annually, ranging from thrill-seekers and adventurers to those in search of tranquility or a balanced vacation.

According to Bakhrji, the project will offer a wide variety of hospitality, leisure, entertainment, and accommodation options. The complex plans to host three hotels with a total of 800 rooms and 11 dining establishments. Moreover, it will feature an extreme sports and adventure park, a premium marina, and helipads.

Bakhrji highlighted that the array of water-centric activities at THE RIG would include a diving center, an amusement park, a splash park, as well as an e-sports center, an immersive theater, and a multi-purpose arena.

The project not only honors Saudi Arabia’s oil and gas history but also strives to deliver a singular experience that positions it as a premier destination. First announced in 2021 by the sovereign fund, THE RIG exemplifies the nation’s commitment to sustainable economic advancement.

The design and operations of THE RIG are expected to adhere to the highest global standards of sustainability and environmental conservation, aligning with the practices outlined in Vision 2030’s “Projects” page.

As one of the many ambitious projects underway, THE RIG is a testament to the transformative impact of Vision 2030 on Saudi Arabia’s tourism and entertainment industries. It promises to introduce cutting-edge experiences for visitors while fostering economic development.
