The Saudi Space Agency (SSA) today inaugurated the Space Debris conference, an international gathering themed “Securing the Future Growth of the Global Space Economy.” This pivotal event is designed to escalate global consciousness regarding the perils of space debris and to champion a secure and thriving future for space ventures.
In collaboration with the Communications, Space, and Technology Commission and with support from the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), the Kingdom is spearheading efforts to craft an all-encompassing strategy to confront these challenges. The conference is a hub for dialogue on effective worldwide governance, policy-making, legislation, and fostering cutting-edge research in the sector.
The summit has successfully congregated 260 specialists and orators from more than 50 nations, including illustrious CEOs and pioneers of the space industry. Among the distinguished attendees are the Minister of Communications and Information Technology and SSA Chairman Eng. Abdullah bin Amer Al-Swaha, as well as SSA CEO Dr. Mohammed bin Saud Al-Tamimi.
During his opening address, Dr. Al-Tamimi underscored the conference’s critical role and reaffirmed the Kingdom’s dedication to the stewardship of space debris. He flagged the escalating volume of cosmic refuse and its implications for the safety of space apparatuses and the broader trajectory of space exploration.
With the cosmos littered with myriad fragments and components, Dr. Al-Tamimi declared the urgency and paramount importance of addressing this issue. He also accentuated the necessity for international collaboration in the management of space debris and lauded the Kingdom’s initiatives, through the SSA, to integrate leading practices and sophisticated technologies to mitigate the dilemma.
Dr. Al-Tamimi urged the assembly to pool their expertise and spawn innovative solutions, positioning the event as a prime stage for the exchange of ideas and innovations.
The two-day conference commenced with a series of four dialogue sessions and three keynote speeches, honing in on legislation and the evolving trends in counteracting the effects of space debris. These discussions are anticipated to yield inventive strategies to eliminate hazards and protect our planet.
An exhibition showcasing both local and international entities proficient in space tech and sciences is also featured, aiming to illuminate the perils of space debris and amplify awareness regarding the swift technological progress aiding in the resolution of this global challenge.
