Exploring the Saudi Defense Manufacturing Landscape

Under the expansive economic agenda detailed in Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia has made a concerted effort to diversify and develop a knowledge-intensive economy. A cornerstone of this strategic vision is the establishment of a robust local defense sector intended to bolster national security, generate skilled employment, and fuel economic progression.

Energy Investment Agreement Boosts US-Saudi Partnership

Central to this initiative is the integration of local infrastructure and collaboration with Saudi organizations. This partnership aims to localize manufacturing capabilities and incorporate Saudi enterprises into the global supply chain of defense technology companies. A shining example is Zahid Industries’ commencement of production for components of Raytheon’s AN/TPY-2 missile defense radar system. Additionally, there are ongoing efforts with the General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) to enable local production of essential parts for Raytheon’s Patriot air and missile defense system.

Thus, the key to Saudi Arabia’s emergence as a prime locale for indigenous manufacturing lies in a strong supplier network and strategic cooperation between governmental bodies.

Raytheon’s Latest Initiatives in Saudi Localization

Raytheon has been integral to the Kingdom’s defense, with the Patriot system playing a vital role in protecting the nation. The focus now includes in-country production and testing of critical Patriot system components in partnership with local firms such as SAMI, AIC for Steel, and Zahid Industries. These efforts align with Raytheon’s commitment to the Kingdom’s defense industry, fostering regional growth, self-sufficiency, and support for Saudi Arabia’s industrial and security aspirations.

Leading Raytheon’s Integration with Saudi Goals

As the Managing Director of Raytheon Saudi Arabia and the first Saudi national in this position, I am at the forefront of reinforcing our alliance with the Kingdom. Our endeavors go beyond promoting industrial localization to nurturing the nation’s talent pool. We facilitate the creation of skilled jobs and host annual internship programs that provide Saudi students with valuable training and mentorship, preparing them for successful careers. Raytheon Saudi Arabia boasts a workforce of over 250 in Riyadh and Jeddah, proudly noting that Saudis make up 60% of our employees.

My vision encompasses a continued partnership with government and industry leaders, drawing on global expertise to position Raytheon Saudi Arabia as an essential component of the country’s dynamic defense sector, an activator for the local supply chain, and a top employer within the Kingdom.
