In a significant move to enhance its operational efficiency, King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam has acquired three quay cranes (QC) with automated operation capabilities and three rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTG). This acquisition, facilitated by the port’s strategic partner Saudi Global Ports (SGP), the two container terminals’ operator, marks a considerable advancement in the port’s infrastructure.
The addition of these state-of-the-art cranes increases the port’s QC count to 18 and RTG tally to 50. These cranes are adept at handling the burgeoning size of modern vessels, capable of extending across at least 25 rows of containers, thus enhancing the port’s capacity to service large and sophisticated ships with utmost productivity and efficiency.
SGP’s collaboration with the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) extends beyond equipment upgrades, encompassing the development of personnel expertise in operating these modern cranes. This strategic synergy is in tune with the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, propelling Saudi Arabia towards becoming a pivotal global logistics hub, connecting three continents.
The recent upgrades at King Abdulaziz Port reflect SGP’s pledge to transform the port into a competitive and sustainable maritime nexus, in line with the SAR7 billion commercial outsourcing agreements with Mawani. These developments not only bolster the port’s role but also generate over 4,000 employment opportunities, thereby contributing to the Saudi Ports Authority’s efforts to fortify the ports and logistics sector, ensure supply chain reliability, and enhance the Kingdom’s standing in international rankings.
