Saudi Arabia’s technology sector has rapidly evolved since the launch of Vision 2030, aiming to boost the tech sector’s GDP contribution from 1% to 5% by 2030. This initiative has drawn international tech companies, including Apple, with incentives and a burgeoning digital economy.

Apple plans to expand its presence in Saudi Arabia by launching its first online retail store in summer 2025, followed by flagship physical stores starting in 2026. These efforts include investments in developer training and digital payment infrastructure.

Apple’s Commitment to Saudi Tech Education

Apple’s expansion builds on its investments in Saudi Arabia’s tech education, notably the Apple Developer Academy in Riyadh, established in partnership with local institutions. Since 2019, Saudi developer earnings have surged by 1,750%, with nearly 2,000 students graduating from Apple’s programs.

  • Saudi developer earnings increased by 1,750% since 2019
  • Apple invested 10 billion SAR (US$2.7bn) over five years
  • Nearly 2,000 students completed courses at the Apple Developer Academy

The academy focuses on software development and application design, contributing significantly to the local iOS development sector. Apple also introduced a coeducational Foundation Program to teach coding and game development fundamentals, with plans for further expansion.

Beyond education, Apple’s investment extends to digital infrastructure, including a 10 billion SAR investment over five years, fostering job creation and tech adoption across sectors.

Digital Payment Expansion

Apple integrated its Apple Pay system with Riyadh’s public transport, making it the first Middle Eastern city to use Express Mode for seamless payment. This aligns with Vision 2030’s goal of 70% e-payment adoption by 2030, as more Saudi customers switch to contactless payments.

Apple’s retail expansion begins with an online store in 2025, offering products and support in Arabic. Physical stores, including a flagship in Diriyah, will follow in 2026.

Apple’s strategy supports local businesses and entrepreneurs, enhancing employment in the iOS development sector. CEO Tim Cook expressed enthusiasm for deepening customer connections and helping Saudis explore their passions and grow their businesses.
