Naver Corp., South Korea’s top online platform, has agreed to collaborate with the Saudi Data & AI Authority (SDAIA) to develop an Arabic large language model (LLM) and advance cloud computing and robotics technologies.

This memorandum of understanding was signed during the Gain Summit 2024, a global AI event in Riyadh. Naver Cloud Corp. and Naver Labs Corp. will work with SDAIA to create the Arabic LLM, build and manage data centers, provide cloud services, and develop AI robots and their applications.

SDAIA, which oversees AI and big data initiatives, is spearheading Saudi Vision 2030 projects under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Earlier this year, Naver incorporated Arabic translation into its AI-driven translation service, Papago.

This agreement follows a five-year project initiated in July between Naver and the Saudi government to develop digital twin platforms for Riyadh and other major cities in Saudi Arabia.

“In addition to our digital twin collaboration, we will team up with Saudi Arabia’s leading AI technology partner,” Naver stated.

A digital twin is a virtual replica of a physical entity used for simulation, testing, and maintenance.

Naver views LLM as a significant growth area. Its upgraded LLM, HyperCLOVA X, released last year, showcases superior Korean language capabilities compared to ChatGPT.

Saudi Arabia is a key player in the Middle Eastern AI market, projected to reach $135.2 billion by 2030, accounting for 12.4% of its GDP, according to PwC.
