A significant agreement was reached in Riyadh during the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Saudi Arabia. The consortium of TotalEnergies and Aljomaih Energy and Water Company (AEW) signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) for the 300 MW Rabigh 2 solar project.
This initiative is part of Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Program, which aims to balance electricity production equally between gas and renewables by 2030, reducing reliance on liquid fuels. The solar plant, to be developed and operated by the consortium, is expected to connect to the grid by 2026.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, emphasized the project’s role in supporting Saudi Arabia’s renewable goals and TotalEnergies’ strategy to enhance energy provision with lower emissions. Ibrahim Al Jomaih, Chairman of AEW, highlighted the project’s alignment with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and the company’s commitment to the energy transition.
This project marks another milestone for TotalEnergies in Saudi Arabia, complementing their ongoing construction of the 119 MW Wadi Al Dawasir solar plant, set to begin operations in early 2025.
TotalEnergies’ Renewable Ambitions
TotalEnergies aims to achieve net zero by 2050, expanding its renewable portfolio, which includes solar and wind energy, to deliver sustainable power. By 2024, TotalEnergies’ renewable capacity reached over 24 GW, with plans to grow to 35 GW by 2025 and exceed 100 TWh of net electricity production by 2030.
