Riyadh – During the French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Saudi Arabia, a significant energy agreement was signed. TotalEnergies and Aljomaih Energy and Water Company (AEW) have entered into a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) for the Rabigh 2 solar power project, which will generate 300 MW.
This initiative is part of the National Renewable Energy Program’s fifth round, aiming for a balanced energy mix by 2030. The project supports Saudi Vision 2030’s goal to reduce reliance on liquid fuels in electricity production. The consortium will develop, build, and operate the solar plant, with grid connection expected in 2026.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, expressed enthusiasm about contributing to Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy goals, highlighting the company’s commitment to energy transition and emissions reduction. Ibrahim Al Jomaih, Chairman of AEW, emphasized the project’s alignment with Saudi Arabia’s Green Initiative and their dedication to energy transition through partnership and excellence.
This project marks another milestone for TotalEnergies in Saudi Arabia, complementing their ongoing development of the 119 MW Wadi Al Dawasir solar plant, set to commence operations in 2025.
TotalEnergies’ Renewable Ambitions
TotalEnergies aims to achieve net zero by 2050, expanding its renewable portfolio to include solar and wind power. By the end of 2024, their renewable capacity exceeded 24 GW, with plans to reach 35 GW by 2025 and over 100 TWh of electricity production by 2030.
